Internship at Wild Apple Graphics

Harper's Archive Article on Public Land Use Illustration

This was for a project that the great and wonderful Durwin Talon, John Foerster, and Dick Krepel set up for the MFA grads this year. Harper's magazine is putting up an on-line gallery of public domain articles from the 1800s and my fellow grads and I had the opportunity to do some illustrations for them.
This is my illustration for an anonymous essay on public land use, published in 1884. The government had a policy where individuals could buy 160 acres of land for a very low price, as long as they developed the land. Timber corporations, however, would cheat the system by sending employees to purchase these shares of land and then harvesting the timber. There was no way to thoroughly regulate the land use, and therefore the government and public lost this land. The hand in the foreground represents the corporations and the one in the background represents the government and public interest.

News and Updates

Quite some time since I've posted, fortunately, I've spent it making art, to be subsequently posted. Here's the new and exciting news:

-My series of Eagle Butte reportage drawings has been accepted to the SCAD Small Works exhibition, to be displayed at the Gutstein Gallery in Savannah from November 20th - December 24th. The opening reception will be held on November 20th from 6pm-8pm, and I invite you to come and look at some great art!

-I got a little teaching gig, teaching a Drawing Savannah workshop on March 6th from 11am-5pm through the SCAD Continuing Education Department. We will be drawing the buildings of Savannah in a variety of mediums. If you are interested, please stay posted for further information!

-Also, my friend Amber and I will be attending the College Art Association Conference on the weekend of February 13th in Chicago. If you have any questions about the conference or are going and want to meet up there, let me know!

-I passed my review and get to graduate... Gott sei Dank!

Fifty one cards and two brewskies later...

I made an additional stamp for the interior... I figure this will come in use for future card making!

And I made one more stamp for some envelope decor.

Linoleum Block Print Process

So the one good thing that came out of my Techniques 1 class in spring quarter was learning how to linoleum block print (or, relearning, as I had last done this in 7th grade... I made an awesome raccoon and parrot print back then ^_^). I already printed one card, and wanted to make a thank you card, so here's the process!

After completing my initial sketch, I held it up to my high-tech lightbox (some people call it a "window") to trace it backwards for the print.

Then I colored the back with an ebony pencil (color dark!) and laid it on the linoleum block to trace the image.

Like so! (Check your work to make sure the transfer is working!)

Then I started cutting with a Speedball cutter. Here's a tip, DON'T MAKE YOUR IMAGE AS SMALL AND DETAILED AS I DID! And if you do, try etching or something, 'cause, damn, this took me a really long time.

Note the time, yes, that is AM.

Inking time!!! I find plastic covered cardboard (like a cereal or Gardenburger box) works best. Make sure you roll the ink evenly across the roller.

Then coat evenly across the print. It's a trick making sure it's not too much, not too little, but remember that every part that's blue will be on your paper in the end, so if you don't want the little scratch marks (I think they add character), gouge them out with your cutting knife.

My first practice print! This needs more ink, for sure. Today I'm going to buy some more and mess around with printing in different colors. I'll post the final printed on the card when it's done!

At the beginning of June, I went to New York City for the SCAD Summer Illustration Seminar. These were follow-up projects: a thank you card mailer and a poster advertising the trip for next summer.
